About school

The foundations of NiÅŸantaşı Anatolian High School were laid in 1849, when Lord Stantford Redcliffe's wife, Lady Stratford REDCLIFFE, opened a girls' school in BeyoÄŸlu Bursa Street. Girl students from all nationalities were admitted to the Girls' High School on Istiklal Street, but the language was English. This situation was appreciated by Sultan Abdülmecid and upon the opening of such a school, the building in BeyoÄŸlu was gifted to Lady Redcliffe by Sultan Abdülmecid. After a while, studies were started in order to provide a healthy education to the children of foreigners and especially members of the British community in Istanbul. In 1905, a principal and assistant principal were brought from England and a Boys School was established in BeyoÄŸlu. French and Turkish teachers were also procured from Istanbul, and the school, which started education and training, was established in the Kuledibi district around Galata by the British Royal State Consul General, Mr. Waugh. The school established here started to provide education under the name of English High School Boys.

The first year at the school there were thirty-one students, nineteen English and twelve other nationalities. A plot of land in FiruzaÄŸa was given as a gift to the British Embassy by Sultan ABDULHAMÄ°T II to the school, which was taught by Turkish teachers as well as English teachers. When it was understood that this land was not suitable for the school under the conditions of that time, it was decided to sell the land here, and on 12 April 1911, Sultan Mehmet 5 ReÅŸat allocated the current place in TeÅŸvikiye with a five-storey wooden building on the condition that it be used only as a school.

The school, which started education in its new place in 1912, was destroyed by a fire in 1920, and it faced great financial difficulties during the renovation. The school was managed by Mr. WHITTHALL, Chairman of the Board of Trustees until 1930. The school passed under the control of the State of the Republic of Turkey with the Law of Unification of Education on March 3, 1924. A.Åž.

After the Second World War, the school's continuing education and training as boarding and daytime led to an increase in the number of students in the school, which revealed the need for an additional building. In 1951, the school gained the status of "High School". Permission was obtained for the construction of the additional building in 1955, so the primary school that expanded itself after the Treaty of Lausanne became English Boys High School. However, due to financial difficulties, he had to give up this status between 1966 and 1969. On October 24, 1971, Queen Elizabeth II of England, his wife Philip, the Duke of Westminster, and his daughter Princess Anne visited the school.

The school, which is an extension of the understanding of raising "gentlemen", which is a tradition of British schools, was signed between the Minister of National Education Necdet UÄžUR and the British Ambassador Derek DODSON on October 1, 1979, despite all the financial support calls made by the British Consulate since 1973, due to the ongoing financial impossibilities. It was transferred to the Ministry of National Education with a protocol and was named NÄ°ÅžANTAÅžI ANADOLU HIGH SCHOOL.
